Anyone who has been in a relationship or has raised a family knows that the calling can be very stressful at times. Particularly when relationships are not going well or even failing altogether, emotions can run high. People often do things that they ordinarily would not in these situations.

It is no surprise, then, that in our law firm’s experience, criminal allegations and other serious accusations often arise in the context of a family law or another domestic relations matter.

For example, at times, people really do make mistakes in the midst of a tense domestic situation that they later regret. On the other hand, one person may also try to get an edge in a family law dispute by falsely accusing the other person involved of child abuse or domestic violence.

Criminal law matters related to the domestic arena can be quite serious. In addition to damaging a person’s reputation and hurting his professional and other opportunities, a conviction can also lead to hefty fines and strict terms of probation. For some types of offenses, jail or even prison are possibilities. Accusations involving children are particularly complicated and have especially high stakes.

On a related point, even having a civil order of protection entered against her can have serious consequences for a Lake County, Illinois resident.

While we handle lots of different types of criminal cases, we consider ourselves particularly adept at handling criminal and related matters that are somehow connected to a domestic issue. While we maintain the ability to negotiate a criminal case with local prosecutors, our combined experience and knowledge also enables us to advocate effectively on behalf of our clients. We often can even predict how the state will proceed in its case and mount a strong defense to the state’s strategy.
